As exclamations filled the hall, and my heart pounded in my ears, I sat and gripped the edge of my chair. I could sense Meuric’s confusion, and I desperately wanted to look at Kai to explain, but I had to follow through with this course of action now. The Council had to believe I was serious. I didn’t know who we could truly trust. If they thought I was readying myself for Fate’s Day, then I could work in secret to perhaps – no, hopefully find another way. I only hoped Kai was still interested in working together.

“Well, Lady Ceridwen, I must say I am impressed. You are showing a degree of maturity some others are lacking,” Sabra said with a sideways glance at Kai. “I assume there will be no more night-time visits to either of the realms?” she continued pointedly.

“Absolutely,” I promised. No night-time visits, at least.

“We should double our guard patrols until Fate’s Day is over,” Lord Celestri said brusquely to both the Nos and Sol generals, who nodded. “And warn them that these Shadowwraiths appear to be able to re-coalesce unless you go for their throats.” He looked up at me, his mouth a grim line.

I shivered at the look in his eyes; he appeared to be holding back his anger. I bit my lip. Was I doing the right thing? Perhaps he was still having problems with Eva. I hadn’t seen him like this before. Usually, Council matters were dealt with quickly and satisfactorily and then the Celestris went back to their idyllic lives. …Or maybe not so idyllic. I watched Lady Celestri take Lord Celestri’s arm, but he didn’t look at her, and her eyes narrowed to slits as they walked away from their seats and led the Council members from the Chambers. With a start, I saw the meeting was over.

“Come on, Ceridwen,” Meuric said. I realised we were the only ones left in the room.

I got to my feet and winced as my old boots pinched my toes. “I’ll meet you at the training yard. I need to collect my boots from the dress shop,” I told Meuric as we headed out of the chambers.

“Just don’t wear a dress to training,” he quipped, and I did a double-take. Jokes, now? Really? He glanced at my face. “Sorry – trying to lighten the tension.”

“Thanks, Meuric,” I said, limping slightly down the steps and along the road.

As I passed an alleyway beside the dress shop, urgent whispers coming from inside it stopped me. I flattened myself against the wall. I knew those voices, and I had to bite my tongue to stop myself from gasping aloud.

“You told me this would work,” Lady Celestri hissed.

“I was right, wasn’t I?” Sabra returned coldly.

A Nos alleyway was the last place I expected to find Salomé Celestri, but perhaps that was the point. I peeped around a stack of boxes and watched the two ladies standing closely together, deep in conversation. Sabra had the hood of her cloak up, while Lady Celestri kept to the shadows.
